The Academy boasts a wide range of subjects including vocational courses such as; Sports Studies, Hairdressing and Motor Vehicle Technology.

The Academy has state of the art facilities which Stephen was able to see during a tour. Students have access to Music, radio, television and recording studios, a motorcycle engineering centre and fully equipped centres for Hairdressing, Beauty and Child Care.

Upon arrival Stephen was able to hear the fantastic North Liverpool Academy choir and meet with students of the School Council. Stephen had already met with NLA students when he presented them with an award to progress to the next stages of the Great Enterprise Schools Challenge in Liverpool. The students’ Farmers Market idea impressed judges and means they are now in the final ten. On the day Stephen also met a student named Luke who is currently one of Liverpool’s Young Lord Mayors. Luke will represent North Liverpool Academy when attending local council meetings and Liverpool’s School Parliament.

Many thanks Principal Kay Askew and students for welcoming Stephen to NLA.

Friday January 27th will mark the 67th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the Nazi concentration and extermination camp which is the site of the largest mass murder in history – and in the weeks running up to the day, the Holocaust Educational Trust placed a Book of Commitment in the House of Commons, giving MPs the chance to honour those who were persecuted and killed during their Holocaust and encouraging constituents to actively speak out against prejudice and bigotry today.

In the weeks around Holocaust Memorial Day, thousands of commemorative events will be arranged by schools, faith groups and community organisations across the country, remembering all the victims of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides. This year, people will also be encouraged to take a stand against racism and prejudice today – and to speak out against hatred wherever they encounter it.

Stephen said “Holocaust Memorial Day marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau – and is an important opportunity to both remember the victims of genocide. I encourage all constituents to mark the day and commit to to ‘speaking up and speaking out’ against prejudice today.”

At the beginning of the tour Stephen met the team at Liverpool Carers Centre and was able to speak with staff about the support for unpaid carers including support groups, health and fitness sessions and counselling. The tour then moved to Local Solutions Scotland Road site to learn more about the work the organisation does to support victims of domestic violence, bullying and young homeless people. Stephen met with staff from Worst Kept Secret - provision of a confidential telephone helpline, advice and support to victims of domestic abuse. Stephen also met with staff leading on a project called ‘Addressing Barriers for Change (ABC) - an outreach service for victims of domestic violence who also have additional barriers such as disability, culture, language and drug/alcohol dependency.

The lunch marked the start of a lottery funded project to modernise the Theatre.

The multimillion pound project aims to give the Theatre space a revamp as well as allowing greater engagement with local communities and residents. The lunch was the first of two planned to mark the beginning of the exciting project. Twelve guests sat on the famous Royal Court stage. Sitting on the set of The Royal Court’s current popular show ‘Little Scouse on the Prairie’ guests enjoyed a three course meal whilst chatting about the theatre and its exciting education programmes.

A successful bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund means the The Royal Court Liverpool Trust can begin improvement works on the Grade II listed art deco theatre. Stephen said “The Royal Court Theatre provides a fantastic resource to schools and young people. As a producing theatre, it has much to offer young people from the chance to perform on stage to helping them learn more about the theatre industry through work experience placements and apprenticeships.”

“I’m delighted to be here to learn more about the plans for the renovation of the theatre and how the Trust will encourage young people to get involved in this important regeneration project for the City.”

Anfield and Dovecot Drop in Study Centres (DISCs) are two of the four Centres located in Stephen’s constituency. Stephen was delighted to tour the facilities with the Principal of Liverpool Community College, Elaine Bowker, meeting staff and students.

DISCs are part of the wider Liverpool Community College. DISCs are local facilities which are located around the city in community hubs. The aim of the DISC service is to encourage learning and allow students to gain more confidence in their skills. DISCs provide access to computers and the internet, a book-lending service as well as connections to the central college network and campus.

There is a vast choice of classes available for students to choose from including basic skills, Maths and English, Beginner Language courses and cookery to name but a few.

Stephen said “Drop in Study Centres like the ones in Anfield & Dovecot are providing an invaluable service for students who want to improve their abilities. Touring the centres allowed me to see the fantastic work being done in our local communities.”

Broughton Hall students continue to maintain their fantastic results year on year. Stephen said “Broughton Hall is a fantastic school with an inspirational headteacher in Ged Murphy. It is always wonderful to visit Broughton Hall and celebrate the remarkable achievements of students.”

During the evening guests watched a video showing the transformation undertaken by the school in the past year.
